Postdoctoral Researcher in Space Radiation Modelling

We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher to work in the context of the ESC2RAD H2020 project “Enabling Smart Computations to study space RADiation effects” ( The postdoc will work on the modeling of space radiation effects (mainly protons and electrons) on different components of future human space missions, such as functional materials of the spacecraft and biological molecules of relevance for DNA damage in astronauts.

Candidate profile:

  • PhD degree in physics/chemical physics/computational quantum chemistry.
  • Expertise in DFT/ MD methods or in Monte Carlo particle transport (Geant4).
  • Good communication skills in English (oral, written).
  • Some expertise in scientific programming (fortran, C++, python, ...)

Postdoctoral Researcher in Atmospheric Chemistry

The Division of Quantum Chemistry and Physical Chemistry of KU Leuven and the Royal Belgian Institute for Space Aeronomy (BIRA-IASB) seek a highly motivated and skilled Postdoctoral Researcher to join their teams. This recruitment is part of the research profile REVOCS “Re-evaluating the role of volatile organic compounds through quantum theoretical and modelling studies” within the framework of FED-tWIN, the Programme of sustainable research cooperation between the federal scientific institutes and the universities.

Candidate profile:

  • PhD in Chemistry obtained at the earliest 12 years prior to the submission date of the job application. The 12-year period is extended by one year for each maternity, parental and adoption leave of the candidate and for each long-term sick leave of the candidate or his/her immediate family.
  • Relevant publication track record with at least one first author publication.
  • Able to guide PhD students and coordinate the projects between our teams.

Internship “Development of a Mobile-DOAS Viewer”

The Royal Belgian Institute for Space Aeronomy is looking for a student to develop a server with webinterface for near real-time map visualization of mobileDOAS measurements of trace gas concentrations such as NO2. This could be done in the framework of a thesis or internship.

The BIRA-IASB Aeromobil is a mobile remote sensing instrument, developed to measure trace gas concentrations which are strongly linked to air quality/pollution.

Candidate profile:

  • Bachelor or Master study – ICT option
  • A general interest in atmospheric chemistry/physics, air quality and/or geoscience is an asset
