The Royal Belgian Institute for Space Aeronomy: Science between Heaven and Earth
The BIRA-IASB promotional film “Science between Heaven and Earth” (YouTube) presents our federal research institute, active in both fundamental and applied sciences, whose research fields extend from the atmosphere of the Earth to the atmospheres of other planets and celestial bodies.
However, our institute is more than that, and it are exactly this complexity and diversity that have been difficult to sum up in such a short story. We also study space physics and the interactions between the Sun and the Earth's atmosphere, between the Earth's atmosphere and space. In this film, we also wanted to present the B.USOC, whose objective it is to provide operational support to scientists who have missions in space, and to show the fantastic work of our engineering and IT department.
The Royal Belgian Institute of Space Aeronomy: an impressive societal tool
With this film, we illustrate how studying space using measurements and data from satellites, groundbased stations or even models, allows us to better understand the universe that surrounds us. This better understanding is key to preserving it. Therefore, this promotional tool shows our direct societal importance to as large a public as possible.
Our goal has been achieved: in the meantime, the film, which exists in three language versions (English, French, and Dutch), has already been viewed more than 1000 times and we are pleased with all the enthusiastic feedback.
We would like to express our explicit thanks to BELSPO, the Belgian Scientific Policy, without whose support this achievement would not have been possible.
